#3 Marketplace; where it all happens

I wonder how can i live to be all that I can be?
son, its very simple, one old wise man says,
don't get carried away by visuals of your wide eyes
you can win this game, long enough if you stay

Everytime I hear the often mentioned statistics that 99% of startups fail within initial few years, I often wonder if they failed because of their lack of focus on what matters most. What is it that matters most for startups or for that matter any business to sustain and grow itself over time? Is this a simple question with obvious answer? If this is simple question, then why do we see startups and and established companies screwing it up every now and then, sometimes fatally? I think its not as simple as it sounds.

I believe most companies fail to realize that with every new product or service release, they are expecting the marketplace to accept it with either their eyes closed or with open arms. When that doesn’t happen, in these competitive times, ground beneath these companies shakes. Either their success or their visualization of possibilities, in cases of startups, takes their focus away from their pertinent objective, which is to serve the marketplace. Now that brings us to question, What is this marketplace?

Marketplace is this constantly shifting, restless, impatient, touchy feely, emotional, very vocal entity made up of individuals and businesses looking for their next “high” in experiencing their everyday lives. If latest product and service from your company is not able to meet this expectation of this marketplace, it has a tendency to be very boorish and snobbish in its outlook towards your company. Their slights and snubs is the only press your company is going to get in this case.

However, if your company is able to focus on this one expectation that the marketplace has from you, then you are sure to receive its accolades as well and if the price is right then it can be very liberal in its praise of your company.

Often, this is the only parameter that separates the survivors from those who perish. And as the old wise man says, if you survive long enough, you are already a winner and you have a chance to live upto your full potential.
