Importance of losing first and winning later when it comes to making friends and customers for a business (, person or nation)
In today’s society, being genuinely good comes across as being naive or unworthy and is seen as such. As a result, everybody has their defences up when they deal with another person in any situation especially where it involves give or take of money. Its a dilemma for a business or someone looking to sell and create a purposeful long term relationship with a customer that must be resolved.
When the business is new or when every new or old customer is critical to retain, chances are one has to short sell oneself at times. it can lead to lot of anger and frustration and some of that may show to the customer as well, which only ruins your chances of repeat business once the current assignment is delivered. Allowed to continue, it would aggravate the unpleasant feelings and disturb one’s peace of mind while withdrawing would mean loss of business.
When repeat business is apparent, the best action sometimes is to submit to the customer’s demands and prove that you can do a good job without making money the issue. Once some trust is developed, the guards will be lowered and you would be trusted with your pricing in a much rational way on future deals. If that happens, you would more than make up for your lost margins and that would be a customer worth keeping and the relationship thus created would have the potential beyond the immediate dealings of business. The customer would be your ally.
